Portico: A thoughtful collection of fine New Zealand made goods

Over one hundred years ago, Varneys Italina Greengrocers was built on the west London Street in Lyttelton. This little wood and tin structure is still standing despite the recent violence of earthquakes which have destroyed much of historic Lyttelton.

Purveyors of fine good made in New Zealand, proprietor Maree Henry-Ellis has a created a miniature department store. Amongst the french plished oak shelves and fresh flowers is an idosyncratic collection of goods. This collection has been creafully chosen and from the start, Maree has filled her shop with everything she likes.

It has become an ever evolving showcase of books, childrenswear, ceramics, lampshades, heirloom seeds, silk scarves and so much more. Everything is useful and beautiful and easy on the eye.

Like the Italian Greengrocer before us, Portico is full of colour and form and the flavour of New Zealand.
